What types of transitions should I expect when installing new carpet or flooring?

“Transitioning carpet to other surfaces can be done in several ways. One way would be to consider transitioning new carpet to existing carpet. For example, if you’re going to be carpeting a living room and a hallway and off that hallway are several other rooms that have carpeting and those carpets are not going to change, you’re going to have to transition the new carpet to the old carpet. The way that’s done is we will straight edge the old carpet right under the door so that the new carpet cannot be seen from the existing room, and the old carpet cannot be seen under the door from the hallway. So in that case we’ll straight edge the carpet right under the door and hot melt seam that together.

Another way to do that is if you’re going to be transitioning carpet to, let’s say ceramic tile, what we’ll do is we’ll put typically a roll of tack strip, maybe even Z bar which is a metal stripping that doesn’t show. That actually goes under the carpet and we basically flip the carpet over the top, tuck it underneath, and it holds it into place and it makes it so it doesn’t really release at all. That’s one of the ways that we recommend very highly. Transitioning with a Z bar can be done against linoleum, vinyl flooring. It can be done against laminate flooring. It can be done against ceramic tile, porcelain tile, and even stained concrete.

There are other transitions to consider. For example, if you buy a cork floor or you have an existing cork floor and you’re transitioning to carpet, typically the manufacturer of flooring will have a transition strip. The appropriate transition strip to transition from that type of floor. Again it can be laminate, hardwood, cork, miscellaneous floors like that. And those are the appropriate transitions that match that floor to transition your carpet. In those cases, we can still use Z bar to be able to fasten that carpet down and ensure that you have a long life with both the carpet and the new floor.”
